~Gene Baur: The Intersections of a Meat-Based Diet and Climate Change

-What: Gene Baur, animal rights activist, best-selling author and president and cofounder of Farm Sanctuary is coming to Wes! He will be giving a talk entitled: The Intersections of a Meat-Based Diet and Climate Change: How Our Food Choices Make a World of a Difference.
~IMPACT to bring Francisco Rodriguez to campus
-IMPACT! Humanity, Wesleyan's microfinance group, will be bringing Francisco Rodriguez to campus early this February to discuss the most recent United Nations Human Development report.
-The presentation should be about 30 minutes followed by a panel discussion and is open to the public.

Action On Campus!
~Copenhagen Rapid Responder
-During the Copenhagen climate negotiations, Dec. 7-19, the Energy Action Coalitions, its partners, and youth delegates will be coordinating rapid response efforts in the United States so that the movement can receive breaking updates and collectively engage in the negotiations.
-With your help, we'll assemble a Rapid Response team of hundreds of people so that on a moments notice we can generate thousands of phone calls, get our message out to the media, and effectively mobilize together.
-The goal of this rapid response team is no small task: to affect the U.S. negotiation position. But if enough of us engage in a timely way together, we can do just that.
-As part of the Rapid Response team, you'll be expected to devote 1-2 hours of your time at least every other day to mobilizing around the negotiations. You'll receive breaking updates through emails and phone calls from youth delegates in Copenhagen who are setting up a phone (skype!) bank.

What: Free screening of Food Fight with a Q & A session afterwards with the director.

Come for good cider, food, and music during your lunch hour.

-When: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, November 17 2009
-What: mingle with staff, volunteers, business owners and others working in Middlesex County to keep our communities green and growing! The guest speaker will be Sherill Baldwin, facilitator for the state DEP’s Materials Reuse Network. The MRN is a group of professionals interested in materials reuse and increasing deconstruction and building materials reuse activities in Connecticut. Sherill will talk about the work of the group and how deconstruction may increase reuse and recovery efforts of construction, renovation and demolition debris and surplus/salvaged goods in the state.
Come make connections, exchange news, brainstorm and relax. We’ll gather in the mezzanine overlooking the bar—appetizers ordered before 6 pm are half-price. At 5:45 we’ll take a few minutes for introductions and begin our informal program. All are welcome to Meet Your Greens –no reservations needed. Questions? What: The Morris K. Udall Foundation awards $5,000 scholarships to sophomore and junior undergrads with a demonstrated commitment to solving environmental issues through policy, science (hard and soft), engineering, architecture, economics, the arts, or any combination of the above. Udall Scholars also get to attend the Scholar Orientation in August and are immediately plugged into a growing and active alumni network.

And you’ll travel with Greenpeace around the country or world to campaign and join a team of incredible activists working to protect the planet. GOT students return to their campuses with vastly increased skills, and many go on to work for Greenpeace or other campaigning organizations.

-The City of Middletown Public Works Department is hosting its 7th Annual Children’s Recycled Sculpture Contest!
-Sculptures are on display in the lobby of City hall. Votes will be taken Monday and Tuesday, November 23 and 24th for the People’s Choice Award. Come see the sculptures and vote for your favorite!! Anyone can vote, but please vote only once. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 1st! The public can come to City Hall the week of Nov. 16th to view the sculptures and then vote on Nov. 23 and 24 from 8:30 am. – 8:00 p.m.

~The Energy Conservation Showdown Prize (aka the ECS or “X” -Prize) is a competition to discover the best student-created ideas to reduce Wesleyan‘s energy consumption. Teams of students will compete to win cash prizes by submitting reports of at least three pages in length on how to best cut back on greenhouse gas emissions while also saving the University money.
-The members of the first place team will receive $600; two runners up will each receive $200. Additionally, the top-scoring submissions will be forwarded to President Roth for implementation, to help both the planet and Wesleyan’s finances.
-The recently created ECS-Price presents a great opportunity for members to break up into pairs or small groups to draft proposals for energy conservation on campus. -We have a great chance to win this prize!

~City of Middletown Announces Expansion of Plastic Container Recycling
-In an effort to encourage Middletown residents to recycle more, the City of Middletown is excited to announce that it will accept #3 - #7 plastic containers at its Recycling Center for recycling. Currently the City accepts plastic containers with a #1 and #2 on the bottom. Starting immediately, residents can also bring down other plastic containers that have a #3-7 on the bottom of the container. It can include various food containers such as deli and yogurt containers, shampoo bottles and Styrofoam containers.
-This is currently limited to the City Recycling Center, although they do hope to eventually expand it to curbside collections
-The The City Recycling Center is located on the corner of Johnson St and North Main St. It is open Monday – Friday 7 am – 3pm and every Sat. through November 7am – 12 noon. December – March it is open only the first and third Sat of the month 7am – 12 noon. A residence pass must be obtained to bring in free recyclables. This can be obtained at the Department of Public Works in City Hall upon presentation of your vehicle registration.

~Service Week Next Semester
-The Senior Class Officers are putting together a "Service Week" for next semester that will allow students to participate in giving back. They are coordinating with agencies/organizations in the North End of Middletown to host service projects each day of the week at their various locations during a time frame of 3 to 6 PM. Students will be able to sign up for these activities online.
-They are also hoping to plan service projects that can occur during lunch hours at the Usdan Center. Ideally these projects will include activities such as making cards for a nursing home, assembling goodie bags for a health center, envelope stuffing, etc. These activities would be one-time service projects that would allow students to drop in at their leisure.

-What: David Leff, the former deputy commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Protection is coming to speak about his new book, "Deep Travel: In Thoreau's Wake on the Concord and the Merrimac".
-His book recounts his stories of traveling the same rivers Thoreau did 150 years ago and the differences in landscape that he noticed.

-What: The Beehive Design Collective is a non-profit, volunteer driven, political arts organization who's mission is to “cross pollinate the grassroots” through the creation of images as an effective medium for deconstructing and educating the public about complex geopolitical issues.
The presentation at Wesleyan will be "Dismantling Monoculture": an interactive, visual tour of the connections between COLONIZATION, MILITARISM and RESOURCE EXTRACTION in the Americas.
With three giant illustrated portable murals, a six foot tall fabric storybook “slideshow”, and an engaging narrative, the Bees will be exposing the agendas of the Free Trade Area of the Americas, Plan Colombia, and celebrating resistance to the “Plan Puebla Panama” in Mesoamerica.
Join in as we deconstruct the complex and overwhelming issues that are shaping our world, using bioregionally accurate depictions of animals and insects as metaphors to link cultural and ecological diversity.

~WSA debates the Green Fund Resolution
-When: Sunday, November 15th, 7-9pm
-Where: Usdan 110
-What: WSA will be debating the Green Fund Resolution (attached). This resolution would create a $15/semester opt-out student fee that would go toward sustainability initiatives on campus. The money would likely add up to about $60,000-80,000 each year, which would be spent on a wide range of projects that address environmental issues from climate change to waste. There is more described in the resolution, and much more will be said at the meeting, but the take-home point is that the creation of this fund would provide a significant, sustainable source of funds for sustainability initiatives on campus.
Most WSA meetings are sparsely attended by members of the student body, if at all. If this meeting is the most attended of the year, that will send a loud and powerful message to WSA members to vote Yes on the Green Fund Resolution.

-That's why it's so critical right now for President Obama to step up his involvement in the process and push for a strong bill -- and we need you to push him to do just that.
-Let's deliver 25,000 petition signatures to President Obama by December 1st. Urge the President to step up on climate by pushing for bold climate action at home and around the world, especially at the UN Climate Change Conference next month:

-The idea is that embodying ideas in movement can catalyze learning in interesting and unexpected ways often leading to a deeper understanding of science.

The Jonah Center (an environmental education and preservation organization in Middletown) recently got a grant to develop an afterschool environmental education program for 6th graders. They are looking for a group of Wesleyan students to help teach. This is a great opportunity to get involved in community service and environmental education. This is a chance to be a part of the exciting global 350.org movement's International Day of Climate Action! 350 refers to the safe upper-limit of CO2 in the atmosphere, measured in parts per million.
350 Wesleyan will follow up this event with a demonstration at Senator Lieberman's office in Hartford this November. Lieberman, who spent last fall campaigning for climate change denier Sarah Palin, is now working to weaken the Senate climate change bill with subsidies to the coal industry.

-What: David Leff, the former deputy commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Protection is coming to speak about his new book, "Deep Travel: In Thoreau's Wake on the Concord and the Merrimac".
-His book recounts his stories of traveling the same rivers Thoreau did 150 years ago and the differences in landscape that he noticed.

~The Beehive Design Collective: Dismantling Monoculture
-When: Thursday, November 11th, at 6pm
-Where: 200 Church Lounge
-What: The Beehive Design Collective is a non-profit, volunteer driven, political arts organization who's mission is to “cross pollinate the grassroots” through the creation of images as an effective medium for deconstructing and educating the public about complex geopolitical issues.
The presentation at Wesleyan will be "Dismantling Monoculture": an interactive, visual tour of the connections between COLONIZATION, MILITARISM and RESOURCE EXTRACTION in the Americas.
With three giant illustrated portable murals, a six foot tall fabric storybook “slideshow”, and an engaging narrative, the Bees will be exposing the agendas of the Free Trade Area of the Americas, Plan Colombia, and celebrating resistance to the “Plan Puebla Panama” in Mesoamerica.
Join in as we deconstruct the complex and overwhelming issues that are shaping our world, using bioregionally accurate depictions of animals and insects as metaphors to link cultural and ecological diversity.

~WSA debates the Green Fund Resolution
-When: Sunday, November 15th, 7-9pm
-Where: Usdan 110
-What: WSA will be debating the Green Fund Resolution (attached). This resolution would create a $15/semester opt-out student fee that would go toward sustainability initiatives on campus. The money would likely add up to about $60,000-80,000 each year, which would be spent on a wide range of projects that address environmental issues from climate change to waste. There is more described in the resolution, and much more will be said at the meeting, but the take-home point is that the creation of this fund would provide a significant, sustainable source of funds for sustainability initiatives on campus.
Most WSA meetings are sparsely attended by members of the student body, if at all. If this meeting is the most attended of the year, that will send a loud and powerful message to WSA members to vote Yes on the Green Fund Resolution.

First of all, we had over 100 people there!!! Amazing turn-out, Wes! The meeting began with a general introduction from the two coordinators, Anne Rosenthal and Josh Levine. They stated EON's mission and goals, as well as introduced the other organizational positions, which are as follows: Social Coordinators: Alex Provo and Emilie Knight, Secretary: Hannah Monk, Webmaster: Melody Chang, and Treasurer: Meggie McGuire. Then each currently existing sub-group/campaign gave a brief description of their work on campus, current goals, and ways to get involved. They are:
SAGES: Sarice Greenstein: em.greenstein@gmail.com
~The Sustainability Advisory Group that meets once a month with smaller sub-committees meeting more frequently. Works closely with administration to implement sustainable initiatives on campus.
Landscaping: Nora Christiani: nchristiani@wesleyan.edu
~Successfully received approval for wildflower proposal last year. Currently trying to implement policies regarding pesticide-use and native plant restoration
Compost: Emilie Knight: emknight@wesleyan.edu
~Currently working towards institutionalization of compost on campus. Would love ideas, energy, and people that aren't afraid to get a little dirty
Roosevelt Institute: Jeff Bizinkauskas: jbizinkauska@wesleyan.edu
~Wesleyan's student policy organization which is connected to other student policy think-tanks across the country.
~They meet with students to help students develop ideas and would like to work closely with EON to turn ideas into policy
