Edition 5 (10-19-09)

THE GREEN SCENE: Edition 5
The Green Scene is Wesleyan's new environmental newsletter. Look to us for weekly updates on relevant news, lectures, conferences, meetings, and other interesting little environmental tidbits.
*If you have anything you would like included, please submit it to weseon@gmail.com each week by Monday afternoon*

TONIGHT, Monday, October 19th will be our October All-EON meeting at 9pm in the Woodhead Lounge. Everyone should attend. We'll hear about what the different groups and campaigns have been up to. There will be food provided.

Events/Lectures:
-350 Wesleyan and Greenpeace present

An Evening of CLIMATE ACTION with:

-an address by 350 scientist Dana Royer, co-author with James Hansen et al. of "Target CO2: Where Should Humanity Aim?"

-assembly of a powerful photo petition

This is a chance to be a part of the exciting global 350.org movement's International Day of Climate Action! 350 refers to the safe upper-limit of CO2 in the atmosphere, measured in parts per million.

350 Wesleyan will follow up this event with a demonstration at Senator Lieberman's office in Hartford this November. Lieberman, who spent last fall campaigning for climate change denier Sarah Palin, is now working to weaken the Senate climate change bill with subsidies to the coal industry.

Action On Campus!
-Going places for Fall Break? Use the Wesleyan Rideboard!
-Go to your Student Portfolio, then Student Life at Wesleyan, then Rideboard.
-Easy way to save money and gas on your way home for break and back by sharing the cost with friendly classmates.
-Post a request for a ride, or let others know where you're headed and offer them a seat.

-Needed on Campus: tech-savvy volunteer
-This year, we're going to be expanding the Do It In The Dark program to the Program Houses, and we need a tech-savvy volunteer to put together a new section of the current website! For someone who knows what they're doing this won't be hard, so if you're capable, volunteer! We'll cook something for you! email weseon@gmail.com if you have interest!

~Free Market: Coming Soon
-WesRUM is helping to organize a Free Market for after Fall Break. If you get a chance to go home during fall break, pick some items and bring them back to campus.
-Then you can drop off those things you don't use anymore and take some nifty treasures in return!

Outside Opportunities:

-Volunteer with other Wes students to teach environmental education to 6th graders:
"After School Environmental Education Program With The Jonah Center"
The Jonah Center (an environmental education and preservation organization in Middletown) recently got a grant to develop an afterschool environmental education program for 6th graders. They are looking for a group of Wesleyan students to help teach. This is a great opportunity to get involved in community service and environmental education. The program is starting in late November and will be running next Spring. As I don’t have all the details yet, for the moment I am looking for a list of people that are interested. Please email Peter (pgilchrist@wesleyan.edu) by next Tuesday (Oct. 20th) at 9 PM if you are interested. Please include your name, class year, and contact info. Thanks, hope to hear from you!
